WhizzBang Fireworks: Essential Safety Guide
At WhizzBang Fireworks, we want your celebrations across Glasgow and Scotland to be both spectacular and safe. Before setting off your display, ensure you follow these official firework safety guidelines and UK law.
The Firework Code
- Plan ahead: Read all instructions on individual fireworks by flashlight before dark.
- Keep distance: Ensure spectators stand at the safe distance marked on each firework (typically 8 metres for Category F2 or 15–25 metres for Category F3).
- Lighting fireworks: Light at arm’s length using a taper or safety lighter, then stand well back.
- Never return: If a firework does not go off after lighting, never go near it again. Leave it alone for at least 15–20 minutes, then soak it in a bucket of water.
- Alcohol: Never drink alcohol if you are setting off fireworks.
- Pockets & Pouches: Never carry fireworks in your pockets or throw them.
- Secure setup: Light all fireworks in a clear, open outdoor area away from trees, sheds, overhead cables, and dry grass.
Sparkler Safety
- Sparklers reach temperatures over 1,000°C—always wear gloves when holding them.
- Never give sparklers to children under 5 years old.
- Always supervise older children when using sparklers.
- Hold sparklers at arm’s length away from the body and clothing.
- Keep a bucket of cold water or sand nearby to plunge used sparkler wires into immediately after use.
Pet & Animal Safety
- Keep dogs, cats, and small pets indoors with curtains drawn and windows closed.
- Turn on the TV or radio to help mask the sound of loud bangs.
- Make sure your pets have microchips and up-to-date tags in case they get spooked and escape.
- Check garden bonfires or leaf piles for hibernating hedgehogs and wildlife before lighting.
UK & Scottish Firework Laws
- Curfews: It is illegal to set off fireworks between 11:00 PM and 7:00 AM. Exceptions apply for Bonfire Night (midnight curfew), New Year’s Eve, Diwali, and Chinese New Year (1:00 AM curfew).
- Age Restrictions: You must be 18 or older to purchase or carry Category F2 or F3 fireworks.
- Public Spaces: It is illegal to set off or throw fireworks in any street, thoroughfare, or public place without proper licensing.
- Firework Control Zones (FCZs): Check local council regulations across Glasgow and surrounding areas, as setting off fireworks in designated Firework Control Zones is strictly prohibited by law.
